Biography:  EnglishPortuguês    Pedro da Silva New York composer and guitarist. Pedro da Silva New York composer and guitarist. Pedro da Silva New York composer and guitarist.
Portuguese composer and guitarist Pedro Henriques da Silva has had schooling in Paris, Lisbon, Ottawa and Brussels. He received his Bachelors in guitar and his Masters in composition from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, studying with guitarist Oren Fader, and composers Giampaolo Bracali, Nils Vigeland, George Tsontakis and Richard Danielpour. He taught music theory at the same institution at the graduate level in 2003 and is presently completing his Doctorate in composition.

Mr. da Silva’s works have been performed in concert-halls in Europe and the United States, perhaps most notably in Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, Mallorca (Spain), Suolahti (Finland), Rome and New York. In 2004, Pedro da Silva had two débuts at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall: as a guitarist on April 5th, where he played in an all-Spanish concert that garnered 16 positive reviews and that was partially shown on two different Spanish TV channels; and as a composer on April 25th, when Asaf Blasberg, upon winning the 2003 Artists International Competition, performed Mr. da Silva’s ATANOS for solo piano. About this composition Dr. Roberta Zlokower from robertaonthearts.com wrote in a review: “This was a quintessential wild work, at once exciting and electric. With incredible contrasts in mood and volume, […] [this was] a compelling composition.”  Mr. da Silva is currently writing an oratorio on the book of Revelation of John whose completion is scheduled for the beginning of 2005. After that project he intends on completing an opera begun in the year 2000 on St.-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince.

His performing career has taken him to Canada, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, the United States and India, performing primarily on guitar but also on all kinds of plucked string instruments (including mandolin, sitar, Portuguese guitar, viola braguesa, electric guitar and cavaquinho). In India, Mr. da Silva studied sitar with renowned master Neeraj Prem, a disciple of Shujaat Khan who is himself the son of the most respected sitar player in India, the late Ustad Vilayat Khan. In that same year in New Delhi , Mr. da Silva performed on classical guitar for distinguished guests, including an Indian princess, at the residence of an important Indian politician. The following year he travelled back to India and gave a sitar concert at the historical Shiv Niwas palace in Udaipur.

Mr. da Silva believes that to become a well-rounded composer one must not only have a strong command of music theory and music history, but also be an instrumental, vocal and corporal performer. To that effect, Mr. da Silva has had the privilege to sing and dance in the première performances of two operas: Christian McLeer’s House (1999) and Allen McCullough’s Pedro’s Hour (2002) that was written in his honour.

Young Argentinean virtuoso pianist Lucía Caruso and Mr. da Silva have recently formed the highly original ‘Caruso-da Silva Duo’ in which she plays piano and harpsichord, and he sitar, mandolin, Portuguese guitar and classical guitar. They are exploring and creating new sounds by mixing Western and non-Western music in styles that range from Renaissance to Contemporary, North Indian to Flamenco and Tango to Bossa Nova. Most of the music they perform is improvisational, blending different cultures and traditions in a seamless and cohesive whole. As a duo, they have performed in Wolcott , Colorado , New York City and in Swan Lake , New York . In November 2004, they have concerts scheduled in Rome , Lisbon and New York . They are also recording a CD of original compositions and improvisations.

Aside from composing and performing, Mr. da Silva is presently writing an extensive theoretical work on musical modes that he intends to publish. A lover of languages, Mr. da Silva knows how to speak and write fluently in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, and has a conversational level in Italian and German.
